Limbé and Buea: what to know before planning a visit

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 6 min read

Limbé, on the coast west of Douala, is known for its botanic garden, its wildlife centre and its black volcanic sand beaches; Buea, higher up at the foot of Mount Cameroon, is the capital of the South-West region. Both are in the South-West region, where several governments advise against all or all but essential travel because of the ongoing crisis in the English-speaking regions. Before planning anything, read your own government's current advice. If it advises against going, do not go. This page explains what these places are and what the advice says.

Check before you plan

Advice changes. Read the current page of your own government before booking, and again a few days before travelling. Many travel insurance policies do not cover trips to areas your government advises against. We do not arrange transport or stays in the South-West.

Limbé: the botanic garden, the wildlife centre and the beaches

  • The Limbé Botanic Garden, founded in the 1890s during the German colonial period, is a garden for research and conservation by the sea.
  • The Limbé Wildlife Centre, created in 1993 by the Government of Cameroon and the Pandrillus Foundation on the grounds of the former zoo, cares for rescued primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas and drills.
  • Black-sand beaches: the sand is dark because of the volcanic rock of Mount Cameroon, whose slopes reach the ocean here.
  • The town also has a fishing harbour and seafront restaurants known for grilled fish.

Buea: at the foot of Mount Cameroon

Buea lies on the eastern slopes of Mount Cameroon, at about 870 metres, so it is noticeably cooler than Douala. It was the capital of German Kamerun from 1901 to 1919, and today it is the capital of the South-West region and home to the University of Buea, Cameroon's first English-speaking university. It is also the starting point of the Mount Cameroon climb and race.

If your family lives in Limbé or Buea

Many families of the diaspora have relatives in Limbé, Buea, Tiko or Kumba. Your government's advice still applies to you, whatever your ties to the region. Talk with your relatives about the current situation, and consider meeting in Douala instead: family members can come to you, and you can spend time together in a furnished apartment with space for everyone.

Beach and nature without the South-West

  • Kribi, on the coast of the South region, about 3 hours from Douala: long sandy beaches and the Lobé Falls, which drop into the sea. See Kribi from Douala.
  • The West highlands, for cooler air, markets and chiefdoms. See the road to the West.
  • Douala and Yaoundé themselves, where ordinary precautions apply. See safety in Douala and Yaoundé.
