Bafoussam travel guide: getting there, climate, markets and nearby towns

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 6 min read

Bafoussam is the capital of Cameroon's West region and the main town of the highlands, at around 1,500 metres. There are no regular commercial flights: you land in Douala or Yaoundé and drive about 4 to 5 hours. The climate is cooler than on the coast, the city is a busy trading and farming centre, and it is the usual base for family visits, funerals and weddings in the villages around, from Bandjoun and Baham to Foumbot.

Getting to Bafoussam from Douala or Yaoundé

FromUsual roadIndicative time
DoualaNorth via Nkongsamba, then up to Bafang and BafoussamAbout 4 to 5 hours
YaoundéNorth-west via Bafia and BangangtéAbout 4 to 5 hours

Many coach companies run daily services from Douala and Yaoundé. With luggage, children or elderly relatives, a car or van with driver is more comfortable and takes you door to door. Leave early, arrive in daylight and avoid driving at night. The full route, with other towns of the West, is in our guide to the road to the West.

Indicative times

Road times are given for planning and are being checked on the road by our team. Traffic leaving Douala or Yaoundé, roadworks and heavy rain can add an hour or more.

Bafoussam weather: cooler highlands

  • Cooler than Douala: temperatures are usually between about 15 and 27 °C. Evenings and early mornings are fresh; bring a jacket or a jumper.
  • Dry season roughly from mid-November to mid-March: the most comfortable months to travel, and the busiest for family events.
  • Rainy season roughly from mid-March to mid-November: heavy showers, and village roads can turn muddy. An SUV or a van helps on dirt roads.

Markets and shopping

Bafoussam is a regional trading town for the produce of the highlands: coffee, maize, potatoes, beans and vegetables. Its two main markets are known as Marché A and Marché B. For a family event, the town is a good place to complete your shopping (drinks, food, fabric, household goods) before going to the village, with more choice than in the villages. Keep small notes and Mobile Money for markets, and watch your phone and bag in crowded places.

Where to stay in Bafoussam

Bafoussam has hotels in a range of standards, and many visitors stay with family. On big funeral and wedding weekends, especially in December, rooms fill early: book as soon as the date is set and read recent reviews. We do not have apartments in Bafoussam. Tell us your dates and what you need: we will see what we can arrange, without promising anything we have not checked ourselves.

Many families also sleep one night in Douala or Yaoundé on the way in and out, so that nobody drives straight after a night flight.

Practical tips for Bafoussam

  • Money: Bafoussam has banks and cash machines; villages around rarely do. Withdraw in town. See money in Cameroon.
  • Phone: MTN and Orange cover the city; coverage can be weaker in some villages.
  • Power cuts happen: carry a power bank and a torch.
  • Safety: ordinary precautions, as in any big town. The road north-west from Bafoussam towards Bamenda leads into the North-West region, and the South-West region lies beyond Dschang to the west: several governments advise against travel to both. Check your government's current advice.
  • Dress: light clothes by day, a warm layer for the evening, and comfortable shoes for markets and villages.
