Funerals and family events in Cameroon: organising the trip from abroad
Updated on 23 October 2026 · 8 min read
Many families of the diaspora come home for funerals, traditional weddings and family or village events, in towns and villages all over Cameroon. Wherever the village is, the trip follows the same steps: landing in Douala or Yaoundé, a night in town, then the road with a driver. We take the West (Bafoussam, Dschang, Bafang, Bangangté, Mbouda, Foumban) as our main example, because so many families travel there. This guide is about the journey, so that the family can concentrate on the ceremony.
Plan early: the busy weeks fill up first
Funerals and family celebrations are often set months in advance, and many take place in the dry season and during the diaspora's holidays: December and January, Easter, July and August. Those are also the weeks when flights, vehicles and hotel rooms outside the big cities are hardest to find. As soon as the date is known, book flights, the arrival pickups and the vehicle for the road; two to three months ahead is a good rule.
Which airport: Douala or Yaoundé?
- Douala (DLA) has the most international flights and suits the Littoral, the coast and most of the West (Bafoussam, Dschang, Bafang, Mbouda). See arriving at Douala airport.
- Yaoundé-Nsimalen (NSI) suits the Centre, the South and the East, and in the West works well for Bangangté and Foumban, or if part of the family lives in Yaoundé. See arriving at Yaoundé-Nsimalen.
A typical plan for the trip
| Day | What happens |
|---|---|
| Arrival | Landing in Douala (often late at night), pickup at the airport, night in an apartment in town. |
| Day 2 | Rest and shopping: the fabric and outfits chosen by the family, gifts, drinks and supplies for the event; the town has more choice and better prices than the village. |
| Day 3 | Early departure by road to the village with a car or van with driver (for the West, 4 to 5 hours). |
| Event days | Ceremonies in the village; the driver stays with you for the trips between the village, the town and the family homes. |
| Return | Early departure back to Douala or Yaoundé, a last night in town, then the drive to the airport for your flight. |
Why one night in town first
After a night flight and a long journey, driving straight to the village is tiring and often means arriving after dark. A night in Douala lets you rest, gather the family and leave in daylight.
The road to the village: the example of the West
| Route | Indicative time by car |
|---|---|
| Douala → Bafoussam | About 4 to 5 hours |
| Douala → Dschang | About 4 to 5 hours |
| Douala → Bafang | About 3½ to 4½ hours |
| Douala → Bangangté | About 4 to 5 hours |
| Yaoundé → Bafoussam | About 4 to 5 hours |
| Yaoundé → Bangangté | About 3½ to 4½ hours |
Times depend on traffic leaving Douala or Yaoundé, roadworks and rain. Leave early in the morning and avoid driving at night. The last kilometres to a village can be a dirt road: in the rainy season, an SUV or a van is more comfortable. For the West, use the main roads through the Littoral and West regions; several governments advise against travel in the neighbouring North-West and South-West regions. Details in our guide to the road to the West.
A car or van with driver for the whole stay
Elders, children, luggage, several trips a day between the village and the town: a vehicle with a driver who stays with you for the whole stay is the simplest way to travel. Tell us the number of passengers and bags, the days, the town and village, and whether you sleep outside Douala or Yaoundé; your quote then states what is included (driver's meals and lodging out of town, fuel).
Where to sleep near the village
Many families stay in the family home. Otherwise the nearest town usually has hotels and guesthouses (in the West: Bafoussam, Dschang, Bangangté), but rooms become rare on the big event weekends: book as soon as the date is set. Outside Douala and Yaoundé we do not have apartments yet. Tell us your town and dates: we will see what we can arrange, without promising anything we have not checked ourselves.
When the whole family arrives
- Make one list with each person's name, flight number, date and time of arrival.
- Choose one contact person in the family to coordinate with us.
- One pickup per flight, or a van when several people land together.
- Apartments in Douala or Yaoundé for the nights before and after the village.
What to prepare and bring
- Cash and Mobile Money for contributions and expenses: cash machines are rare in villages, so withdraw in Douala, Yaoundé or the nearest big town.
- Fabric and outfits: if the family has chosen a fabric, order early; tailors are very busy before the big weekends.
- Warm clothes for the evening if you go to the highlands: in the West, nights are cooler than in Douala, especially in Dschang.
- A power bank and a torch: power cuts are more frequent in villages.
- Your usual medicines, documents and copies of your passport.
Traditional weddings and other family events
The same organisation works for a traditional wedding or dowry ceremony, an enthronement or a family meeting: arrival in Douala or Yaoundé, a night in town, a vehicle with driver for the road and the days on site, and the return. Whatever the occasion, we take care of the transport and the stays in town, so that the family can be fully present.
