Arriving at Douala airport (DLA): a step-by-step guide

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read

Douala International Airport (DLA) is where most travellers to Cameroon land, including almost everyone heading to the West. It sits about 10 km from the city centre: 20 to 45 minutes by road depending on traffic. Here is what happens from the moment you leave the plane, and how to make the first hour easy.

Before you land: have these in your hand

  • Your passport, valid at least 6 months after arrival, with a blank page.
  • Your visa: the sticker in your passport, or the printed e-visa approval with its QR code. There is no visa on arrival at Douala.
  • Your yellow fever certificate (the yellow card). It is checked on arrival, for adults and children.
  • The address where you are staying and a phone number in Cameroon. Officers may ask for it, together with your return ticket.
  • A pen: you may be handed an arrival form to fill in.

From the plane to the exit, step by step

  1. 1
Health checkHave your yellow fever certificate ready as you walk in. Keep it with your passport until you are out of the airport.
  2. 2
Passport controlQueues of 30 to 60 minutes are common when several international flights land close together, typically in the evening. Answer simply: the purpose of your visit, where you are staying, how long.
  3. 3
LuggageThere is one baggage hall with few belts. Bags can take 20 to 40 minutes. Trolleys exist but run short at busy times. Only accept help from a porter if you want it, and agree the price first.
  4. 4
CustomsDeclare anything that may be taxed or prohibited (large quantities of new goods, professional equipment). Gifts and personal belongings in normal quantities rarely cause trouble.
  5. 5
Money and SIM cardThere are a few exchange counters and cash machines in the arrivals hall; rates are slightly better in town. MTN and Orange usually have a counter or kiosk: bring your passport, because every SIM card must be registered in the user's name.
  6. 6
The exitThe exit area is outdoors and busy: drivers, porters and families waiting all mix together. If someone is picking you up, agree beforehand where they will stand and what name will be on their sign.

Arriving with family?

If several relatives land on different flights, give each one the name and phone number of the person meeting them. We can organise one pickup per flight, or a van for the whole group.

Getting into town: taxi, ride app or booked pickup

OptionPriceGood to know
Airport taxiNegotiated; about 5,000 FCFA by day is a common referenceNo meter: agree the price before loading the bags. Often 50–100% more at night.
Ride app (Yango)Shown in the appWorks in Douala, but cars can be hard to find at the airport, especially late.
Shared taxi or minibusCheapestNot practical with luggage: you need to walk to the main road.
Booked pickupFixed price, known in advanceYour driver waits at arrivals with your name, follows your flight and helps with the bags.

Arriving at night

Many flights from Europe land between 10 pm and 1 am. At that time there are fewer taxis, prices go up, and you are tired after a long trip. The roads are emptier: Akwa or Bonapriso are often 15 to 25 minutes away. If you arrive late, book your transport before you fly and tell your accommodation your arrival time, so that someone is there to hand over the keys.

Avoid

Accepting a ride from someone who approaches you inside the terminal without being asked, or handing your luggage to someone whose price you have not agreed.

Where to stay after landing

Bonapriso and Bonanjo are calm and close to the business district; Akwa is central and lively, close to the markets; Bonamoussadi and Kotto are residential and good value for families and longer stays. Going on to Yaoundé or the West

Douala is also the usual gateway to the West (Bafoussam, Dschang, Bafang, Bangangté) and to Yaoundé, about 4 hours away by road. Rather than driving straight after a night flight, many travellers rest one night in Douala and leave early the next morning. Read our guide to funerals and family events or book a car with driver for the road.
