Arriving at Yaoundé-Nsimalen airport (NSI): what to expect

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 6 min read

Yaoundé-Nsimalen International Airport (NSI) serves the capital. It lies south of the city, roughly 20 to 25 km from the centre, so the drive is longer than in Douala: count 40 minutes to over an hour, more to reach Bastos or the north of town at rush hour. Here is how to plan your arrival.

Before you land

  • Passport valid at least 6 months after arrival, with a blank page.
  • Visa sticker, or the printed e-visa approval with its QR code. There is no visa on arrival.
  • Yellow fever certificate, checked on arrival.
  • Your address in Yaoundé, a local phone number and your return ticket, in case you are asked.

Inside the airport

  1. 1
Health check and passport controlKeep your yellow card with your passport. Nsimalen handles fewer international flights than Douala, so queues are often shorter, but they can still be long when two flights land together.
  2. 2
Luggage and customsDeclare goods that may be taxed (new goods in large quantities, professional equipment). Personal belongings and gifts in normal quantities are rarely a problem.
  3. 3
Money and SIM cardExchange and cash machines are limited: arrive with a card that works abroad and some euros or FCFA. A local SIM needs your passport for registration; if there is no open counter, buy it in town the next morning.

Getting into Yaoundé

The road from Nsimalen to the city is long, and there is no public transport made for travellers with luggage. Taxis have no meter: agree on the price before you load your bags, and expect to pay more than in Douala because of the distance, and more again at night. Some hotels run their own shuttle. A booked pickup gives you a fixed price, a driver who follows your flight and waits at arrivals with your name.

Arriving late?

The airport empties quickly after the last flight. If you land in the evening, book your transport in advance and tell your accommodation your arrival time.

Where to stay in Yaoundé

Bastos is the embassy quarter: calm, guarded streets and close to many institutions, ideal for missions and visa appointments. Golf and the surrounding neighbourhoods are residential and suit families. The city centre is close to ministries and offices. See our furnished apartments in Yaoundé, checked by our team.

Fly into Douala or Yaoundé?

Douala has more international flights and is usually the better choice for the West and the coast. Yaoundé is the right airport if your business, appointment or family is in the capital or in the Centre and South regions. If your flight lands in one city and you are staying in the other, the road between Douala and Yaoundé takes about 4 hours; we can arrange a car with driver for the transfer. From Yaoundé, Bafoussam and the West are about 4 to 5 hours away: see our guide to funerals and family events.
