Staying in Bonapriso, Douala: a neighbourhood guide

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 6 min read

Bonapriso is a calm residential quarter in central Douala (Douala I), known for its villas, straight streets, restaurants and the many expatriates who live there. It is the central quarter closest to the airport, about 5 km away, and a few minutes from the offices of Bonanjo and the shops of Akwa. It suits families, short business trips and anyone landing late at night. Here is what to expect.

What Bonapriso is like

Bonapriso takes its name from Priso a Doo la Makongo, a prince of the Duala, whose family founded it. Today it is mainly residential: walled houses and villas, small apartment buildings, gardens and schools, along a grid of streets that cross at right angles. It is often described as one of the most pleasant quarters of Douala. Its edges are Avenue Charles de Gaulle, Boulevard de l'Indépendance and the Brasseries du Cameroun brewery.

In the evening, the main streets have restaurants, cafés and bars, but the side streets stay quiet. It is a quarter where you can walk short distances by day, buy bread in the morning and come home without crossing the whole city.

Who Bonapriso suits

  • Families and elderly parents: calm streets, short drives, clinics, pharmacies and supermarkets nearby.
  • Short business trips: Bonanjo's offices, banks and port are a few minutes away.
  • Late arrivals and early flights: the airport is the closest of all the central quarters.
  • Less suited if your days are in the north-east (Bonamoussadi, Kotto) or in Bonabéri: you would spend a lot of time in traffic.

Shops and services

  • Markets: the flower and craft market (marché aux fleurs) is in Bonapriso; for fresh produce in quantity, people go to the big markets of the centre.
  • Health: pharmacies and private clinics in and around the quarter. For hospitals and medical stays, see our medical stay guide.
  • Schools and sport: international and French-curriculum schools, and the Soppo Priso stadium.
  • Money: banks and cash machines are in Bonanjo and Akwa next door; Mobile Money kiosks are everywhere. See money in Cameroon.

Getting around

Shared yellow taxis pass on the main roads, and ride apps such as Yango work well here. By day, many errands within Bonapriso can be done on foot. For a day of meetings, a trip to the markets with purchases to carry, or the road to Yaoundé or the West, a car with driver saves time. At rush hour, the roads towards Akwa and the Bonanjo junctions slow down: leave a margin.

Good to know

Like everywhere in Douala, power cuts happen. Ask whether an apartment has backup power if it matters to you: on our site it is shown on each apartment page.
