Staying in Bonanjo, Douala: a neighbourhood guide
Updated on 23 October 2026 · 6 min read
Bonanjo is Douala's administrative and business district, on the Joss plateau above the port. Bank and company headquarters, the port authority, the courts, the regional administration and several consulates are here, along with some of the city's oldest buildings. It is about 6 to 7 km from the airport and a few minutes from Akwa and Bonapriso. It suits business trips, consulate and bank appointments, and visitors who like a calmer evening once the offices close.
What Bonanjo is like
Bonanjo is the historic seat of the Bell family, one of the three original Duala settlements, and became the administrative centre under German rule. It is bordered by the port to the west and north and by Boulevard de la Besseke on the side of Akwa, Bali and Bonapriso. It is one of the few parts of the city with office towers, and its streets are among the best maintained. On weekdays it is full of office workers and traffic; in the evening and on Sundays it becomes much quieter.
What you find in Bonanjo
