Staying in Akwa, Douala: a neighbourhood guide
Updated on 23 October 2026 · 6 min read
Akwa is the commercial heart of Douala: Boulevard de la Liberté, shops, hotels, telecom and airline offices, restaurants and the city's best-known nightlife, a short drive from the Marché Central and the big markets. It suits business travellers, traders and anyone who wants to be in the middle of the city, about 8 to 10 km from the airport. It is busy and can be noisy: here is how to choose.
What Akwa is like
Akwa is one of the three original Duala settlements on the left bank of the Wouri, with Bonanjo (Bell) and Deïdo, and takes its name from the Akwa clan. Today it belongs to Douala I and is the city's main shopping and business district. Along and around Boulevard de la Liberté you find shops of every kind, hotels, banks, the head offices of the major telecom operators, airline agencies, restaurants, bars and night clubs. The Saints-Pierre-et-Paul cathedral is also in Akwa.
Akwa is busy from morning to late at night, and the streets are full of traffic and street vendors by day. Akwa Nord, further north, is a newer extension of the quarter.
Who Akwa suits
- Business travellers who want offices, banks and restaurants within a short drive or walk.
- Traders and shoppers: the Marché Central, Sandaga and the wholesale streets are close. See buying goods in Douala.
- Visitors who like to go out in the evening without a long drive back.
- Less suited to light sleepers on a street with bars, or to families who want a quiet garden: Bonapriso or the north-east may suit them better.
Choosing a calm apartment in Akwa
Noise depends on the street more than on the quarter. A side street or a higher floor makes a big difference; ask about it before booking.

Shops and services
- Everything for daily life: supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, phone shops, fabric and clothing shops, electronics.
- Markets nearby: the Marché Central, on the New Bell side, and Sandaga for foodstuffs in bulk. Go early in the morning, with small notes and with someone who knows the market if it is your first time.
- Money: many banks and cash machines; withdraw in the daytime, inside a bank when possible. See money in Cameroon.
- SIM card and internet: operator shops for MTN and Orange are easy to find. See SIM card and internet.
- Health: pharmacies on most main streets; the Laquintinie hospital is nearby, in Ngodi.
Getting around
Akwa is where taxis, motorbike taxis and ride apps are easiest to find. The flip side is traffic: the boulevards jam at rush hour and around the markets, so short distances can take a long time by car. By day, walking a few blocks is often quicker. For a day of shopping with heavy bags, a car with driver waits while you buy and carries everything back.
