Business trip to Douala: districts, meetings, traffic and where to stay

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read

Douala is Cameroon's economic capital and its main port. A business trip to Douala usually means meetings in Bonanjo (banks, large companies, administrations), Akwa (offices and trade) or around the port, with traffic as the main constraint. Stay close to your meetings, keep two or three meetings a day, and use a car with driver if your day takes you across the city.

A business trip to Douala: where things happen

DistrictWhat you find there
BonanjoThe administrative district: many head offices, banks, large companies and public administrations, next to the port.
Port areaThe Port of Douala, terminals, shipping lines, freight forwarders and customs services. Industrial zones also lie in Bassa (east) and Bonabéri (across the Wouri).
AkwaThe historic business and shopping district: offices, shops, hotels, restaurants.
BonaprisoA residential district that has become mixed: restaurants, cafés, shopping galleries, some offices. Close to Bonanjo and Akwa.
Bonamoussadi, KottoResidential districts further north-east, good value for longer stays but further from Bonanjo at rush hour.

Before you go: visa and documents

  • Visa: most visitors apply online at evisacam.cm, choosing the business category. There is no visa on arrival at Douala airport.
  • Business documents: the list depends on the embassy that covers your country. The Cameroon Embassy in Washington, for example, asks for a letter from your company taking financial responsibility and an introduction letter from your partner in Cameroon. Check the current list on your embassy's site before you apply.
  • Yellow fever certificate, compulsory for everyone. The rest is in preparing your trip.
  • Business cards and printed copies of key documents: many meetings still start with an exchange of cards and paper files.

Traffic and timing: plan fewer meetings, closer together

Congestion is the main thing visitors underestimate. Heavy lorries going to the port and industrial zones share the roads with taxis and motorbikes, and the bridges over the Wouri towards Bonabéri are often slow. The morning and late-afternoon rush hours are the hardest; a trip of a few kilometres can then take 45 minutes or more.

  • Group meetings by district: Bonanjo and Akwa in the morning, for example, the port or Bassa another day.
  • Count at least an hour between meetings in different districts, more if you cross the Wouri.
  • Confirm each meeting the day before, by phone or WhatsApp; times can move.
  • Avoid driving outside the city at night; leave for another city early in the morning.

A car with driver for a day of meetings

For a day with several meetings, a car with driver by the day is usually simpler than looking for taxis between appointments. The driver knows the districts, waits during the meeting, keeps your bags and samples in the car and takes you back to your apartment in the evening. Send us your programme the day before so the driver can plan the route.

Where to stay for work

Bonapriso, Bonanjo and Akwa keep you close to most offices and save time every morning. A furnished apartment is a good choice for a stay of more than a few nights: a separate space to work, a kitchen, and room for a colleague. Our apartments have Wi-Fi; some have backup power, shown on each apartment page. See all our furnished apartments in Douala.

Working online

If you have important video calls, tell us before you book and we will tell you which apartment suits best. Keep a local data bundle on your phone as a backup: a SIM card is registered with your passport.

Receipts and paperwork for your company

If your company pays or reimburses the trip, tell us when you book. We can put your company's name on the booking confirmation and on the receipts for each payment. Tell us what your accounts department needs (company name, address, tax number) and we will tell you exactly what we can provide. A 30% deposit secures the dates and the balance is due by the day of arrival; see our cancellation policy.

On the ground: a few rules

  • Carry ID at all times: a certified copy of your passport with the visa page, or your residence permit.
  • No photos of government buildings, the port, the airport or military sites: it is illegal.
  • Cash and cards: cards work in hotels and some restaurants; cash and Mobile Money are used for everything else. See money in Cameroon.
  • Language: Douala is mostly French-speaking; many business people also speak English.

Arriving and going on

Douala airport is about 10 km from the centre, 20 to 45 minutes by road; see arriving at Douala airport. A pickup with your name on a sign saves the first hour, especially after an evening flight. If you also have meetings in the capital, read our guides to the Douala–Yaoundé trip and to a business trip to Yaoundé.
