Traditional wedding and dowry in Cameroon: organising the family trip
Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read
A traditional wedding or dowry ceremony (the « dot ») in Cameroon brings two families together, often with relatives flying in from abroad. Plan the trip three to four months ahead: set the date with both families, book flights and the vehicle for the delegation, order the fabric early and buy most gifts once you are in Cameroon. We use the West as an example, but the steps are the same wherever the families live. This guide covers the journey and the logistics; the ceremony itself belongs to the families.
Every family does it its own way
Customs differ from one region, people and family to another: the number of visits before the ceremony, what the bride's family asks for, who speaks for each side, the dress and the order of the day. Some families do a first visit to « knock on the door », then the dowry ceremony months later; others combine everything in one weekend. Ask the elders or the family member who is organising, and follow what they say. What follows only helps you get there and back without stress.
Timeline for a traditional wedding trip
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 3–4 months before | Fix the date with both families. Book flights, especially for December, Easter or the summer. Check passports and visas. |
| 2–3 months before | Book stays in town and the vehicle with driver. Agree on the family fabric and order it. |
| 4–6 weeks before | Send measurements to the tailor or plan fittings on arrival. Get the list from the family and decide what to buy abroad and what to buy locally. |
| 1 week before | Confirm the passenger list, flight times and the meeting point for the delegation. |
| On arrival | One night in town to rest, last shopping, final fittings, then the road. |
December weddings
December and early January are the busiest weeks of the year: flights, vehicles, tailors and hotel rooms outside the big cities are taken early. For our stays arriving between 15 December and 10 January, the deposit is refunded in full only if you cancel at least 30 days before; see the cancellation policy.
Arrival: Douala or Yaoundé, then one night in town
Land in Douala for the Littoral and most of the West, or in Yaoundé for the Centre, the South and the East. Many flights land in the evening: sleep in town, gather the family and leave by road the next morning in daylight. Details in arriving at Douala airport and arriving at Yaoundé-Nsimalen.
Outfits and fabric: order early
- Agree on the fabric first. Families often choose one fabric for each side or for the whole event; ask who buys it and where.
- Tailors get very busy before big weekends and in December. Order as soon as the fabric is chosen.
- Send precise measurements if you sew in Cameroon from abroad, and keep a day after arrival for fittings and small changes.
- Shoes, head ties and accessories are easier to complete in town than in a village.
Gifts and the family list
The bride's family often gives a list. Its content varies enormously between families, so do not rely on a list found online. As a rule, buy bulky and heavy items (drinks, food, household goods) in Douala, Yaoundé or the nearest big town: it saves excess baggage and the choice is wide. Keep cash and Mobile Money ready for contributions; see money in Cameroon. Bulky gifts need a vehicle with space: say so when you book.
Transport for the family delegation
- A van with driver keeps the delegation together, with the gifts and the outfits, from the town to the ceremony and back.
- Agree on one meeting point and one departure time the evening before. The delegation is expected together.
- Leave early and plan the return before dark, or plan to sleep near the ceremony. Avoid driving at night.
- For the West, stay on the main roads through the Littoral and West regions; several governments advise against travel in the neighbouring North-West and South-West regions. See the road to the West.
Tell us the number of passengers and bags, how many gifts, the town and village and the days. Your quote states what is included, such as fuel and the driver's meals and lodging out of town.
Where the family stays
In Douala and Yaoundé, a furnished apartment lets each household have its own space, a kitchen and room to dress on the day. Check-in is from 3 pm and check-out at 11 am. Near a village outside those cities, the nearest town usually has hotels; we have no apartments there yet, but tell us the town and dates and we will see what we can arrange.
If there is also a civil or religious wedding
A traditional wedding is often followed or preceded by a civil wedding at the town hall and sometimes a religious one. The documents for a civil wedding are set by the town hall and, if you live abroad, by your embassy or consulate: ask them several months ahead, because some papers take time to obtain. We do not give legal advice on these steps.
Last checklist before you fly
- Passport, visa and yellow fever certificate for every traveller: see preparing your trip.
- Outfits, or the tailor's address and the fitting date.
- The family list, and who buys what.
- Names, flights and phone numbers of everyone travelling: see family group arrivals.
- Light clothes for Douala and a warm layer for the evening in the highlands of the West.
