Family group arrivals in Cameroon: coordinating several flights for one event

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 6 min read

When a family group arrives in Cameroon for a funeral, a wedding or a family event, relatives often land on different days, airports and flights. Keep it simple: one shared list of everyone's flights, one coordinator who speaks for the family, a pickup per flight (or a van when several land together), apartments in town for each household, and a road departure planned in daylight. Here is how to set it up.

Step 1: one list for the whole group

Before anything is booked, gather everyone's details in one shared sheet or message. A group of ten people on four flights becomes easy to handle once it is on one page.

ColumnWhy it matters
Name and phone (with WhatsApp)So the driver and the coordinator can reach each person on landing.
Airline, flight number, date, timeFlights change; the flight number lets everyone follow the real landing time.
Airport (DLA or NSI)Douala and Yaoundé are 3½ to 5 hours apart by road.
Number of bagsA family returning home often travels with extra cases: it decides the vehicle.
NeedsWheelchair, baby, elderly person, late arrival.
HouseholdWho sleeps with whom, to plan the apartments.

Step 2: one coordinator for the family

  • Choose one person who keeps the list up to date and is our single contact. Two people giving different instructions is the most common source of mix-ups.
  • The coordinator shares changes as soon as they happen: a missed connection, a delayed flight, an extra cousin.
  • Add a second contact in Cameroon if the coordinator is still abroad when the first relatives land.

Step 3: a pickup per flight, or a van

Group the arrivals by airport and time. People landing within an hour or two of each other can share one van; otherwise, one pickup per flight avoids making the first arrivals wait hours at the airport. Flights to Douala often land in the evening, and immigration and baggage can take a while: the driver follows the flight and waits at arrivals.

SituationUsual solution
Two to three people, few bagsOne car per flight
A family with children and several casesAn SUV
Several flights landing close togetherOne van for the group
Arrivals spread over several daysOne pickup per flight, booked separately

Give each traveller the details

Send each person the driver's name and number and the meeting point before they fly, so nobody depends on the coordinator's phone at the moment of landing. See arriving at Douala airport and arriving at Yaoundé-Nsimalen.

Step 4: apartments for several households

Hotel rooms side by side are rarely ideal for a family that wants to cook, talk late and prepare an event together. Several apartments in the same area of Douala or Yaoundé give each household its own space while keeping everyone close. Check-in is from 3 pm and check-out at 11 am: for flights landing early or leaving late, tell us so that we can see what is possible. A 30% deposit secures the dates and the balance is paid by the arrival day.

Step 5: timing the road to the village

  • Leave the morning after the last arrival, not the same evening. After a night flight, people need rest.
  • Leave early. Night falls around 6 to 6:30 pm all year in Cameroon; plan to arrive in daylight and avoid driving at night.
  • Count the real travel time: for the West, about 4 to 5 hours from Douala to Bafoussam or Dschang, more with traffic or rain. See the road to the West.
  • One vehicle for people, one for luggage and supplies if the group is large or you carry goods for the event.
  • Stay on the main roads: several governments advise against travel in the North-West and South-West regions; check your government's current advice.

The return: departures also come in waves

Relatives often leave on different days. Add the return flights to the same list, plan the drive back to town the day before a flight rather than the same day, and book a drop-off for each departure. Frequently asked questions

How do we organise airport pickups for a family arriving on different flights?

Make one list with every flight, group people landing close together into one van, and book one pickup per flight for the others. One coordinator sends us changes.

Can one van pick up several relatives at Douala airport?

Yes, if they land within a short time of each other. Otherwise separate pickups avoid long waits at the airport.

Can we book several apartments for one family?

Yes, in Douala and Yaoundé, subject to availability. Several apartments in the same area keep each household comfortable and everyone close.

When should the group leave for the village?

The morning after the last arrival, early enough to arrive in daylight. Night falls around 6 to 6:30 pm all year.
