Coming from Chad to Cameroon: flights, documents, money and staying in Douala
Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read
From Chad, the simplest way to reach Cameroon is a direct flight from N'Djamena to Douala: under two hours, several times a week at the time of writing. As a Chadian citizen you do not need a visa, only a valid biometric passport or national identity card and a yellow fever certificate, and you keep using the same currency, the FCFA. The road exists, but it crosses areas where several governments advise against travel. Here is how to prepare a trip for trade, health, studies or family.
Documents: what a Chadian traveller needs
- No visa for Chadian citizens. Chad is a CEMAC member, and Cameroon lists Chad among the nationalities exempt from the entry visa. Travel with a valid biometric passport or national identity card; airlines and border posts sometimes ask for the passport, so take it if you have one.
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate, for adults and children. It is checked on arrival in Cameroon.
- The address where you are staying and a phone number in Cameroon. Officers may ask for them.
- Other nationalities living in Chad follow their own rules: most need a Cameroon e-visa, applied for at evisacam.cm before travelling.

By road: why we recommend flying
The usual road from N'Djamena enters Cameroon at Kousseri, then runs south through Maroua, Garoua and Ngaoundéré; another route from Moundou enters near Touboro. Both cross the Far North, the North or the areas along the Chad and Central African borders. Several governments advise against all travel there: the United States (Far North and within 20 km of the Chad border), the United Kingdom (most of the Far North and within 40 km of the Chad border), Canada (within 30 km) and France, which also asks for a military escort on some of these roads.
Check before you go
If you must travel by road, read your government's current advice and the latest local news first. We do not arrange transport on these roads. The distance is well over 1,000 km: from Ngaoundéré, the Camrail night train to Yaoundé takes about 16 hours.
Money: the same FCFA
- Chad and Cameroon use the same currency, the Central African CFA franc (FCFA, XAF). Your notes work in Cameroon without exchange.
- Mobile Money (MTN MoMo, Orange Money) is widely used in Douala and Yaoundé. Buy a local SIM card, registered in your name with your passport or ID card.
- Large sums in cash attract attention: split them and keep them out of sight. Leaving Cameroon with 5 million FCFA or more in cash must be declared.

A buying trip to Douala
Many Chadian traders come to Douala to buy in its wholesale markets and ship goods home through the corridor. Our guide to buying goods in Douala covers the markets, prices and invoices. For a week or a month of buying, a car with driver by the day takes you from market to market, waits while you buy and brings the goods back to your apartment or your transporter.
Shipping goods to Chad
Goods leave Douala for Chad by road, or by train to Ngaoundéré and then by road. Work with a licensed freight forwarder (transitaire agréé), who handles the documents, customs and transport. We do not give customs advice: ask traders who already ship to N'Djamena for references, and get a written receipt for everything you hand over.
Where to stay in Douala
Akwa is central and close to the markets; Bonapriso is calm and close to the business streets; Bonanjo is next to the port and the banks. For a stay of a week or more, a furnished apartment with a kitchen often costs less than a hotel and leaves room to store purchases until they are shipped.
