Travelling to Cameroon from Germany: visa, flights, time and money

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read

From Germany, Cameroon is one connection away, usually through Brussels, Paris, Istanbul or Addis Ababa, for a journey of about 10 to 14 hours. German citizens need a visa, applied for online at evisacam.cm, and a yellow fever certificate. The euro is fixed to the FCFA, German plugs fit, and in winter there is no time difference. Here is what is specific to leaving from Germany.

Visa from Germany: the e-visa and the embassy in Berlin

German citizens apply before departure on the official portal evisacam.cm. Cameroon's embassy in Germany is in Berlin (Ulmenallee 32, 14050 Berlin); there is also an honorary consulate in Hamburg. There is no visa on arrival without an approved e-visa. The general steps are in our guide to preparing your trip.

Time difference with Germany

PeriodTime in Cameroon
Winter time in Germany (late October to late March)Same time as Berlin
Summer time in Germany (late March to late October)One hour behind Berlin

Cameroon stays on GMT+1 all year and never changes its clocks.

Euros, FCFA and sending money home

  • The rate is fixed: 1 euro = 655.957 FCFA. 200 euros is about 131,200 FCFA.
  • Euros in cash are easy to change in Cameroon. For cash machines, a Visa card is the most widely accepted; a Girocard alone may not work abroad, so check with your bank before you go.
  • Sending money to family: services such as Remitly, WorldRemit or Western Union send from Germany straight to MTN MoMo or Orange Money wallets, often within minutes. With a fixed rate, any rate below 655.957 FCFA per euro is the service's margin, on top of the fee.

What to pack from Germany

  • No adapter needed in most cases: Cameroon uses type C and E sockets at 220 V, and German (type F) plugs fit type E sockets.
  • Light clothes, a rain jacket from June to October, a thin layer for Yaoundé evenings and air-conditioning.
  • Your yellow fever certificate with your passport, and advice from a travel clinic (Tropenmedizin) about malaria.
  • The Douane CMR app: fill in the Cameroon customs declaration before you fly. It produces a QR code scanned on arrival, and some airlines check it at boarding.
  • Printed copies of your visa QR code, bookings and the address where you stay.

Travel advice and Elefand

At the time of writing, the German Foreign Office warns against travel to the Far North, the North-West and South-West, the Bakassi peninsula and the border areas with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic, and advises against travel to the North and Adamaoua regions. Douala and Yaoundé are visited with ordinary precautions. Read the current advice and register on the Elefand crisis list before you go.

Germany has a large Cameroonian community, and Cameroonians are the largest group of international students from Africa there, with sizeable communities in Berlin, Braunschweig and Cologne. Students and families visiting home often arrive in summer or December, when apartments fill up early.
