Travelling to Cameroon from the UK: visa, flights, time and money

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read

From the UK, Cameroon is one connection away, usually in Paris, Brussels, Istanbul, Casablanca or Addis Ababa, for a journey of roughly 10 to 14 hours. British citizens need a visa, applied for online at evisacam.cm and handled by the Cameroon High Commission in London, plus a yellow fever certificate. Here is what is specific to leaving from the UK, from the visa sticker to the plug adapter.

Cameroon visa from the UK: the e-visa and the London High Commission

All applications go through the official portal evisacam.cm; the Cameroon High Commission in London (84 Holland Park, W11 3SB), which also covers Scandinavia and Iceland, does not take walk-in visa applications. There is no visa on arrival at Douala or Yaoundé.

Flights from the UK to Douala and Yaoundé

There is no direct flight from the UK at the time of writing. From London, typical one-stop routes include, for example (routes change, so check before booking):

AirlineViaGood to know
Air FranceParis-CDGDirect onward flights to Douala and Yaoundé
Brussels AirlinesBrusselsServes both cities
Turkish AirlinesIstanbulAlso from several UK regional airports

Ethiopian AirlinesAddis AbabaFrom London, and Manchester at the time of writing

Some travellers take the train to Paris or Brussels and fly from there; allow a generous margin, as a missed train does not protect a separate flight ticket. Many arrivals in Cameroon are in the evening or at night, so book your pickup before you fly.

Time difference between the UK and Cameroon

PeriodTime in Cameroon
UK winter, GMT (late October to late March)One hour ahead of London (noon in London = 1 pm in Douala)
UK summer, BST (late March to late October)Same time as London

Cameroon stays on GMT+1 all year and does not change its clocks.

Pounds, FCFA and sending money

  • The pound rate is not fixed. The FCFA is tied to the euro (1 euro = 655.957 FCFA), so the pound's value in FCFA moves with the pound–euro rate. Check the day's rate before you change.
  • Pounds are less easy to change than euros in Cameroon. A card for cash machines in town (Visa is the most widely accepted) is simpler; tell your bank you are travelling and check its fees abroad.
  • Sending money home: services such as Remitly, WorldRemit, Taptap Send or Western Union send from the UK straight to MTN MoMo or Orange Money wallets, often within minutes. Compare the FCFA actually received, not only the fee; wallets have daily limits.

What to pack from the UK

  • A plug adapter: UK plugs (type G) do not fit Cameroonian sockets (types C and E, 220 V). The voltage is close to the UK's, so a simple adapter is enough for most devices. Bring one per person, or a UK extension lead with one adapter.
  • Light clothes all year, a rain jacket from June to October, a thin layer for air-conditioning.
  • Your yellow fever certificate with your passport, and advice from a travel clinic about malaria.
  • The Douane CMR app: fill in the Cameroon customs declaration before you fly. It produces a QR code scanned on arrival, and some airlines check it at boarding.
  • Printed copies of your visa approval, bookings and the address where you stay.

FCDO travel advice: what it means for your plans

At the time of writing, the FCDO advises against all travel to the North-West and to most of the South-West (including Buea and Tiko), to the Far North outside the Maroua area, and to areas near the borders with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic; it advises against all but essential travel to Limbé. Travelling against FCDO advice can affect your travel insurance. Douala and Yaoundé are visited with ordinary precautions. Read the current advice and sign up for its email alerts.

English is one of Cameroon's two official languages, but Douala and Yaoundé are mostly French-speaking day to day. Our team answers in English, and a booked driver saves you explaining addresses in French on the first night.
