Travelling to Cameroon from Italy: visa, flights, time and money

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read

From Italy, Cameroon is one connection away, usually in Paris, Brussels, Istanbul, Casablanca or Addis Ababa, for a journey of about 10 to 14 hours. Italian citizens need a visa, applied for online at evisacam.cm, and a yellow fever certificate. The euro is fixed to the FCFA and the time is the same in winter; the main surprise is the plugs. Here is what is specific to leaving from Italy.

Visa from Italy: the e-visa and the embassy in Rome

Italian citizens apply before departure on the official portal evisacam.cm. Cameroon's embassy in Italy is in Rome (Via Siracusa 4/6, 00161 Roma). There is no visa on arrival at Douala or Yaoundé. The general steps (form, documents, payment, approval) are in our guide to preparing your trip.

Read the approval carefully

It tells you whether to go to the embassy in Rome for fingerprints and the sticker, or to have it done on arrival. Either way, travel with the printed approval and its QR code: airlines can check it at boarding.

Time difference with Italy

PeriodTime in Cameroon
Winter time in Italy (late October to late March)Same time as Rome
Summer time in Italy (late March to late October)One hour behind Rome

Cameroon stays on GMT+1 all year and never changes its clocks.

Euros, FCFA and sending money home

  • The rate is fixed: 1 euro = 655.957 FCFA. 20 euros is about 13,100 FCFA.
  • Euros in cash are the easiest currency to change in Cameroon. For cash machines in town, a Visa card is the most widely accepted; tell your bank before you go.
  • Sending money to family: services such as Ria or Western Union send from Italy to Cameroon, including to mobile wallets. Check that the service pays into MTN MoMo or Orange Money; with a fixed rate, any rate below 655.957 FCFA per euro is the service's margin, on top of the fee.

What to pack from Italy

  • Check your plugs. Cameroon uses type C and E sockets (220 V). Italian three-pin plugs (type L) do not fit; two-pin Europlugs (type C) and Schuko plugs (type F) do. Bring an adapter for anything with a type L plug.
  • The Douane CMR app: fill in the Cameroon customs declaration before you fly. It produces a QR code scanned on arrival, and some airlines check it at boarding.
  • Light clothes, a rain jacket from June to October, a thin layer for Yaoundé evenings and air-conditioning.
  • Your yellow fever certificate with your passport, and advice from a travel medicine clinic about malaria.
  • Printed copies of your visa approval, bookings and the address where you stay.

Travel advice and registration

Several governments advise against travel to the North-West, South-West and Far North regions and to the border areas; Douala and Yaoundé are visited with ordinary precautions. Before you go, read the Cameroon page of the Italian foreign ministry's Viaggiare Sicuri service and register your trip on Dove siamo nel mondo.

According to ISTAT data, about 18,500 Cameroonian citizens lived in Italy at the start of 2025, mostly in Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Piedmont, and the number is growing. Many come home for the holidays or a family event: see our guides to the holidays and funerals and family events.
