Travelling to Cameroon from Switzerland: visa, flights, time and money

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 7 min read

From Switzerland, Cameroon is one connection away, usually in Paris, Brussels, Istanbul or Addis Ababa, for a journey of about 10 to 14 hours. Swiss citizens need a visa, applied for online at evisacam.cm, and a yellow fever certificate. The time is the same as Switzerland in winter, but two things differ from a trip within Europe: the Swiss franc is not fixed to the FCFA, and three-pin Swiss plugs do not fit. Here is what to know before leaving Switzerland.

Visa from Switzerland: the e-visa and the embassy in Bern

Swiss citizens apply before departure on the official portal evisacam.cm. Cameroon's embassy in Switzerland is in Bern (Brunnadernrain 29, 3006 Bern). After approval you receive a QR code, which you present at the embassy or on arrival, depending on the instructions you are given. There is no visa on arrival without it. The general steps are in our guide to preparing your trip.

Bern is the only Cameroonian embassy in the country. If your approval allows the sticker to be put in on arrival, you can avoid the trip to Bern: keep the printed QR code with your passport.

Flights from Switzerland to Douala and Yaoundé

There is no direct flight from Switzerland at the time of writing. From Geneva or Zurich, typical one-stop routes include, for example (routes change, so check before booking):

AirlineViaGood to know
Air FranceParis-CDGDirect onward flights to Douala and Yaoundé
Brussels AirlinesBrusselsServes both cities; same group as Swiss
Turkish AirlinesIstanbulFrom Geneva and Zurich
Ethiopian AirlinesAddis AbabaFrom Geneva

Some travellers from western Switzerland take the train to Paris and fly direct from there; allow a wide margin if your train and flight are on separate tickets. Many connections land in Cameroon in the evening or at night: book your airport transport before you leave.

Time difference with Switzerland

PeriodTime in Cameroon
Winter time in Switzerland (late October to late March)Same time as Geneva and Zurich
Summer time in Switzerland (late March to late October)One hour behind Switzerland

Cameroon stays on GMT+1 all year and never changes its clocks.

Swiss francs, FCFA and sending money

  • The Swiss franc is not fixed to the FCFA. The FCFA is tied to the euro (1 euro = 655.957 FCFA), so its value in francs moves with the franc–euro rate. Check the day's rate.
  • Swiss francs are hard to change in Cameroon: bring euros if you want cash to change, or withdraw FCFA from cash machines in town with a Visa card. Ask your bank about fees abroad.
  • Sending money home: services such as Western Union, among others, offer transfers from Switzerland to mobile wallets in Cameroon. Check that your service pays into MTN MoMo or Orange Money, and compare the FCFA actually received, not only the fee.

What to pack from Switzerland

  • Check your plugs. Cameroon uses type C and E sockets (220 V). Swiss three-pin plugs (type J) do not fit them; two-pin flat Europlugs (type C), common on phone and laptop chargers, do. Bring an adapter for anything with a three-pin Swiss plug.
  • The Douane CMR app: fill in the Cameroon customs declaration before you fly. It produces a QR code scanned on arrival, and some airlines check it at boarding.
  • Light clothes, a rain jacket from June to October, a thin layer for Yaoundé evenings.
  • Your yellow fever certificate with your passport, and advice from a travel clinic about malaria.
  • Printed copies of your visa QR code, bookings and the address where you stay.

FDFA travel advice and Travel Admin

At the time of writing, the Swiss FDFA advises against travel to several parts of Cameroon, including the North-West and South-West regions, the North, the Bakassi peninsula and the border areas. Douala and Yaoundé are visited with ordinary precautions. Read the FDFA's Cameroon page before you go, and record your trip in the Travel Admin app.

French-speaking Swiss travellers will find this site and our team in French as well as English. Coming for a family event or the December holidays? See our guides to funerals and family events and coming home for the holidays.
