Where to stay in Yaoundé: the neighbourhoods compared

Updated on 23 October 2026 · 8 min read

Where to stay in Yaoundé depends on your appointments. For embassies, international organisations and a calm stay, most visitors choose Bastos or the neighbouring Golf quarter in the north-west. For ministries and offices, the city centre is the most practical. For families on a budget and long stays, residential districts such as Omnisport, Santa Barbara or Biyem-Assi give more space for the money. The airport is far to the south, so the south side (Mvan, Ahala, Odza) suits very early flights. Here is each area and who it suits.

How Yaoundé is laid out

Yaoundé is built on hills, at about 750 m, so it is usually cooler than Douala. The compact city centre (Boulevard du 20 Mai, the ministries, the central market) sits in a valley. The quarters of the north-west (Bastos, Golf, Nlongkak) are hilly, green and home to many embassies. The east (Omnisport, Essos) and north-east (Santa Barbara) are residential, the south-west (Biyem-Assi, Mendong) is dense and popular, and the south (Mvan, Ahala, Odza) leads to Nsimalen airport, about 20 to 25 km from the centre.

About these times

They are indicative, by car. Rush hours and heavy rain make them longer; official convoys also close some main roads for a while, especially in the north of the city. Leave a margin before a flight or an embassy appointment.

Bastos and Golf: the embassy side of town

Bastos takes its name from a cigarette factory that opened there in 1936. It is now the quarter of embassies, diplomatic residences and international organisations, with villas on the hills, restaurants, cafés, supermarkets and international schools. Golf, next door around the golf course at the foot of Mont Fébé, is quieter and more residential; the US embassy is at its edge, on Avenue Rosa Parks. Both are the usual choice for missions, visa appointments and families who want calm. Read our guides to Bastos and Golf.

Not every embassy is in Bastos

The French embassy, for example, is at Plateau Atémengué, and the US embassy is in Mbankolo by the golf course. Check the address of yours before choosing, and see our guide to embassy appointments in Yaoundé.

The city centre and Nlongkak

The centre is small: tall buildings along Boulevard du 20 Mai, the Quartier des Ministères, banks, the main post office, the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires cathedral and the central market. It is the most practical base if your days are spent in ministries or offices, and it is livelier on weekdays than at the weekend. Nlongkak and Elig-Essono, just north, sit between the centre and Bastos; the Nlongkak roundabout is one of the city's main junctions.

Residential districts: Omnisport, Santa Barbara, Biyem-Assi

  • Omnisport and Essos (Mfandena, east): residential streets on a hill topped by the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium. Calm on ordinary days; expect traffic on match and event days.
  • Santa Barbara (north-east): newer residential developments, more affordable than Bastos, popular with young professionals and families.
  • Biyem-Assi (south-west): one of the most populated districts of the capital, seat of the Yaoundé VI town hall, with the Acacias market and junction, many schools, small restaurants and shops. Lively and good value; traffic around the junctions is heavy.

The south side: Mvan, Ahala, Odza

The road to Nsimalen airport leaves the city to the south. Since December 2021, a motorway section links the airport to the Ahala interchange, so these areas are the closest to the airport. Mvan, on Boulevard de l'OCAM, is also known for its intercity bus agencies. It is a practical choice for a very early flight or a night between two journeys, less so if your appointments are in Bastos or the centre.

Shops, power and getting around

  • Shopping: every quarter has its market, small shops and pharmacies. Larger supermarkets are mostly in Bastos and towards the centre; at the time of writing, there is a Carrefour in the Playce shopping centre at Warda.
  • Power and water: cuts happen in every neighbourhood. Some of our apartments have backup power; it is shown on each apartment page.
  • Getting around: shared yellow taxis (agree the fare first), motorbike taxis and ride apps such as Yango. The hills and the distances make a car with driver handy for a day of appointments. See getting around Douala and Yaoundé.
